Centenary College honors veterans at annual Veterans Day Tribute

SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary College has planned its 5th annual Veterans Day Tribute for Friday, November 11. The solemn ceremony honoring the service and dedication of all veterans will begin at 11:00 a.m. in Anderson Auditorium at Centenary’s Hurley School of Music. The tribute is free and open to the public.

Brigadier General Jonathan Ellis, Mobilization Assistant to the Director of Operations, Air Force Global Strike Command, will give the keynote address during the ceremony. General Ellis was commissioned through the Reserve Officers Training Corps upon graduating from The Pennsylvania State University in 1984.  He earned his navigator wings in 1985 and his pilot wings in 1990.  He served on active duty from 1984 to 1996 before joining the Air Force Reserves in 1996.  In previous assignments, General Ellis has served as a Traditional Reservist, an Active Guard and Reserve member and an Air Reserve Technician.  He has served in several key positions as both a navigator and a pilot and has previously commanded at the flight, squadron, group, and wing level. General Ellis is a command pilot with more than 4500 hours in B-52, T-37, T-38, T-1 and RQ-4 aircraft.

The ceremony also includes music from members of the Centenary College Choir and showcases veterans among Centenary’s student body as well as the faculty and administration. Centenary students and Army veterans Luke and Cherie Groninger will read the official Presidential Veterans Day Proclamation.

Following the ceremony, Centenary will host a fundraising luncheon sponsored by Barksdale Federal Credit Union to benefit the Yellow Ribbon Scholarship program that provides financial assistance for veterans and their dependents to attend the College. The Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program is a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008.
