Centenary’s Meadows Museum of Art opens new exhibition; hosts panel discussion

"In The Shadow The Secret/En La Sombra El Secreto" by Edgar Cano

SHREVEPORT, LA — The Meadows Museum of Art is celebrating two events next week. South Realism X by Edgar Cano will open to the public on Tuesday, September 26, at 9:00 a.m., and the Museum will host a panel discussion for Centenary in Paris: 2023 Exhibition on Wednesday, September 27, at 6:30 p.m. All Meadows Museum events are free and open to the public.

South Realism X beckons art enthusiasts to embark on a journey into the profound artistic realm of Edgar Cano, assistant professor of art at Northwestern State University of Louisiana, in Natchitoches. “The painting that I do is interested, simultaneously, in its own process and in the events of daily life, reinterpreted from personal experience,” says Cano in his artist statement. Cano is a member of the National System of Art Creators of Mexico and is the current recipient of a grant from the Mexican Secretariat of Culture.

Through his brushstrokes, Cano elevates the ordinary events of daily life from commonplace to extraordinary. At the heart of his work lies the human body, with which he constructs narratives that blur the lines between reality and imagination, inviting viewers to challenge their established perspectives. South Realism X will be on view in the museum’s Project Space Gallery through October 27, 2023.

The Centenary in Paris: 2023 Exhibition panel discussion, held on World Tourism Day, will feature Centenary faculty, staff, and students who played pivotal roles in creating the exhibition. Centenary in Paris is an unforgettable educational experience created by Centenary College where students get the chance to discover the rich culture of Paris while forming lasting bonds with classmates and professors. The panel includes Curt Youngblood, exhibition curator and lecturer in art; Dr. Dana Kress, executive director of the Centenary College of Louisiana Press and professor of French; Dr. Jeff Hendricks, chair of the English department, and two students from the class of 2027. Centenary in Paris: 2023 Exhibition will be on view on the second floor of the museum through September 30 at 3:00 p.m.
