Centenary Wind Ensemble presents spring concert March 17

SHREVEPORT, LA — The Centenary Wind Ensemble, directed by Thomas Hundemer, will present its Spring 2024 concert, "Journeys & Legends,” on Sunday, March 17 at 3:00pm in Anderson Auditorium at the Hurley School of Music at Centenary College. The concert is free and open to the public.

Featured work is the world premiere of Blood of Ares composed by Centenary senior Seth Hooker, who also plays percussion in the group. Blood of Ares is a powerful and dynamic depiction of the Greek god of war (the equivalent to the Roman god Mars) and includes a virtuosic solo piano part performed by Centenary staff pianist Ken Chan, one of the College's many piano professionals on staff.

Additional music on the program includes Aaron Copland's lively El Salon Mexico, Florence Price's The Old Boatman, Verdi's Overture to La Forza del Destino, Paul Hindemith's March from Symphonic Metamorphosis, and Haim Saban and Shuki Levy's music from the famed video game The Legend of Zelda. Rounding out the program are Sousa's The Fairest of the Fair, one of Sousa's finest marches, and the Cole Porter classic Begin the Beguine.

The Centenary Wind Ensemble is made up of Centenary and Bossier Parish Community College students augmented by musicians of all ages from Centenary alumni, faculty, staff, and the local community who generously volunteer their time to perform the rich wind band repertoire.
