Centenary Youth Orchestra’s summer chamber music camp scheduled for May 23-27
SHREVEPORT, LA — The Centenary Youth Orchestra (CYO) will host its annual Summer Chamber Music Camp May 23-27, 2023, at Centenary’s Hurley School of Music. The camp includes daily instruction in small ensemble playing and music theory class. The final day of the camp will feature a performance by each student group in a formal concert.

"Our camp's objective is to place student players in small groups (ensembles), assign them appropriate pieces and have them perform together,” said Dan Santelices, CYO director. “They will be led by professional teacher-musicians who are especially experienced in working with young people. The instructors help guide and encourage young students to listen, count, and play together. Preparedness is fundamental to successful performances, and I am amazed at the accelerated musical development and sense of independence gained by the vast majority of the students who have enrolled over the years."
In addition to the formal instruction, the CYO chamber music camp includes student, faculty, and staff performances and fun activities such as the Music Theory Olympics.
“This camp encourages community,” said Santelices. “For me as a youngster, this experience was my most enjoyable and formative memory. It is important to work (and play!) together as a unit and I love encouraging the social aspect of it all with the all-camp and snack time breaks."
The CYO provides college-level playing experiences for advanced instrumentalists ages 13 and above. CYO members perform repertoire for strings, woodwinds, and brass in both chamber and large-scale orchestral settings. The CYO founded a Concerto Competition in 2019 to further encourage CYO members in their pursuit of excellence in the field of music.
