Dr. Karen Soul named 2021 Athena Award honoree

SHREVEPORT, LA — Dr. Karen Soul, provost and dean of the College at Centenary, has been named a 2021 ATHENA Leadership Award honoree by the Greater Shreveport Chamber Business Development Connection. Now in its 31st year, the ATHENA program honors exceptional women leaders in the Shreveport-Bossier City community.

Soul is one of 16 honorees representing a diverse set of fields and professions, including higher education, healthcare, finance, retail, and the non-profit sector. One honoree will be selected as the winner of the 2021 ATHENA International Leader Award at a luncheon event on November 10, at Sam’s Town Hotel and Casino in Shreveport.

Soul came to Centenary in 2003 as an instructor in the education department. She earned a B.A.S. in elementary education and an M.Ed. with a concentration in language arts at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and a Ph.D. at the University of Texas.

Soul advanced to the position of Vice Provost for Academic Affairs in 2012 and was named Provost and Dean of the College in January 2020.

“I am so pleased that Karen has received this honor,” said Centenary president Dr. Christopher L. Holoman. “The Chamber has recognized what we at Centenary have long known: Karen is a dedicated, skilled, and compassionate leader. I am delighted to work with her every day.”
