SHREVEPORT, LA — On April 10, 2023, two senior art majors will open exhibitions at Centenary College’s Meadows Museum of Art. Mori, by Jan Gary, and Fernweh, by Sophia Romanski, will be on display through May 5. Both artists will give public talks on the evening of April 10, starting at 6:00 p.m.

Mori, the Latin word for “death,” explores the human threats facing the Rocky Mountain region. Oil pipelines, poaching, and overfishing have contributed to habitat loss, increased fires, and extinction risks. “I invite viewers to ruminate on the irreversible damage done to the fragile mountain and tundra ecosystems and consider how to preserve this place of beauty and refuge,” said Gary.

Fernweh, a German word for “missing a place you’ve never been,” depicts magical worlds on hand cut boards, shaped to resemble the familiar classroom chair desks with an attached tablet arm. “Each piece is a childhood dream made manifest. They act as windows not only into another world but into my imagination,” said Romanski.
