Meadows Museum of Art opens 2019-2020 exhibit schedule with Bruce Allen retrospective
SHREVEPORT, LA — The fruits of Bruce Allen’s rich artistic career will be on display in a special retrospective exhibit, 35 Year Waltz, opening Thursday, September 12, at Centenary’s Meadows Museum of Art. Allen, a 1975 graduate of the College, retired in May 2019 after teaching for 35 years in Centenary’s Department of Art.
“It has been a wonderful experience to work with Bruce installing his work for this exhibition,” says Heather F. Wetzel, director of the Meadows Museum. “To see the history and tangible evidence of the past three and a half decades he has spent teaching and making here at Centenary - and to listen to the stories that accompany these objects and his time here - has been nothing less than inspiring. I couldn't have asked for a better introduction to working at the Meadows Museum of Art than to work with Bruce."
The retrospective exhibits artworks of observation, exploration, and experimentation representing different eras of Allen’s career at Centenary, the “35 year waltz” that gives the exhibit its name. Working in a variety of materials and techniques, Allen’s art blends humor and seriousness, playfulness and structure, as it dances around irony and social commentary.
35 Year Waltz opens with a reception at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 12, featuring an artist talk by Allen at 6:45 p.m. The reception and artist talk are free and open to the public. Members of the Friends of the Algur Meadows Museum, a patron group supporting and encouraging the advancement of art in Shreveport-Bossier through the Meadows Museum, can attend a special preview reception beginning at 5:30 p.m. on September 12, before the exhibit opens to the public. Allen’s art will take center stage at another fall event at the Meadows, a book signing of his Bruce Allen’s Paris in Another Light on Tuesday, October 8, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The book, published in spring 2019, features original digital drawings created “on the ground” in Paris during the 17 years that Allen taught Centenary’s “May Module” courses in the city.
