SHREVEPORT, LA — Recently retired professor of art Bruce Allen mentored and influenced generations of Centenary students during a teaching career spanning more than 30 years. Earlier this fall, Centenary’s Meadows Museum of Art opened a retrospective of Allen’s work entitled 35 Year Waltz, giving former students, friends and colleagues, and community art lovers the chance to view and reflect on his creative legacy. During the month of November, the Museum has also added Legacy: An Alumni Art Show, a companion exhibit featuring more than a dozen of Allen’s former students.

Legacy launched Monday, November 4, at the beginning of Centenary’s 2019 Homecoming Week and will be on display through November 25. Allen’s retrospective closes on the same day. Both exhibits are free and open to the public.

“The opening of Legacy: An Alumni Art Show upstairs in an adjacent gallery to the recreation and installation of Bruce's office, alongside a showing of a small sample of works created by his predecessor Willard Cooper, provides illustrative visual bookends to Bruce's career and influence here at Centenary,” says Heather F. Wetzel, director of the Meadows Museum and curator for the show. “Legacy was open to any alum who wanted to participate and includes a range of practices, subject matter, and materials. Even though the only unifying concept for the exhibition is a shared history as an art student here at Centenary, there is a cohesiveness that carries through the gallery.”

Legacy showcases an eclectic mix of styles and media from 14 Centenary alumni, including:

Autumn G. Casaus ’05 (Shreveport, LA – mixed media)

Breanna Christie ’14 (Shreveport, LA – oil on canvas)
