Meadows Museum at Centenary College to celebrate 50 years of art
The Meadows Museum at Centenary College is excited to announce its 50th anniversary celebration marking a significant milestone in its history as a center for artistic and educational excellence. To honor this achievement, the museum will host a festive birthday party on Saturday, February 21st, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The 50th anniversary commemorates five decades of dedication to collecting, conserving, and interpreting works of art for the college community and the broader public. The museum’s roots trace back to 1969 when Algur H. Meadows, a Centenary alumnus and philanthropist, purchased and donated 360 artworks by French artist Jean Despujols to the College. He also provided funds to transform the former administration building into a dedicated museum space.

Since its official opening to the public on February 21, 1976, the Meadows Museum has grown to house over 1,600 pieces, representing cultures from around the world. The exhibitions this spring are a celebration of Mr. Meadows’ original gift, the collection as a whole, and its unique position as an academic museum.
“Our largest object and our smallest object are on display, and cultures from across the world are represented,” said Alissa Klaus, director of Meadows Museum. “Faculty from across campus have also contributed to the interpretation of the artworks on display, showcasing the cross-disciplinary collaboration that takes place at campus museums.”
The mission of the Meadows Museum is to serve as “an educational unit of the College charged with the collection, conservation, preservation and interpretation of visual art works of museum quality from the College Collection inclusive of the Indochina Collection of Jean Despujols.”
“This semester's exhibition truly reflects that mission,” said Klaus. “Each gallery focuses on a different aspect, honoring the history of the institution and the collaborative nature of campus museums.”
Everyone is welcome to attend the birthday party, and no RSVP is required. For more information about the event, visit https://www.themeadowsmuseum.com/meadows-events/50-birthday.
