Meadows Museum of Art to open Andy Warhol exhibition

SHREVEPORT - On Tuesday, April 5, the Meadows Museum of Art at Centenary College will open its newest exhibition, Instant Memory: The Polaroids of Andy Warhol. Curated and installed by Centenary students Anna Jane Storms ’23 and Jae Tuggle ’25, Instant Memory explores themes of nostalgia and friendship and asks why the Polaroid has become such an iconic tool to capture memory.

In 2008, the Meadows Museum of Art received 155 photographs through the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Project, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Andy Warhol Foundation. Intended to increase access to a lesser-known body of Warhol’s work, the Andy Warhol Foundation donated works to 180 teaching institutions across the country, which has since inspired new perspectives on Warhol’s use of film photography.

Throughout his career, Warhol captured thousands of images of his social circle with his camera. Recently, there has been a revival in the interest of instant cameras among young adults. This exhibition features a selection of Warhol’s prints from the museum’s permanent collection as well as disposable camera prints taken by Centenary’s student body.

“Warhol questioned consumerism and celebrity culture through various forms of film photography,” wrote Storms and Tuggle in their curator statement. “We invite you to consider why the act of film photography can make even the most ordinary things so captivating.”

Storms and Tuggle will deliver a curator talk for Instant Memory: The Polaroids of Andy Warhol on Wednesday, April 6, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Meadows Museum.

Due to copyright protection and light sensitivity, there will be no photography allowed at this exhibition.
