Welcome to the Hurley School of Music! Musicians at Centenary College study in an all-undergraduate environment. This focus on undergraduates means that all Centenary music students have many opportunities to perform as soloists, lead groups as a conductor, participate in ensembles, or act in stage roles. When students graduate from Centenary, their music resumes are full of quality experiences that prepare them for careers or graduate school.
With three choirs, orchestra, wind ensemble, opera workshop, and numerous chamber groups, students have a full range of ensemble experiences to explore.
Great Things Happening at Hurley
Our honored chamber singing group Chorale just returned from a triumphant performance at the American Choral Directors Association National Conference in Chicago in March 2011. They were part of a new feature of the conference, as the ACDA inaugurated a Jewish Shabbat service to correspond with the Christian service they have traditionally offered during the conference.
Christine Linschoten, a May 2011 Centenary graduate in choral music education, was one of eight undergraduate students chosen nationally by a stringent video taped audition to compete in the ACDA National Conducting Competition during that same conference in Chicago in March 2011
The Centenary College Choir will travel to New York in February of 2012 to perform at Carnegie Hall in "Flowers over the Grave of War" by composer and Centenary alumnus James Eakin.
Centenary's composition studio was chosen to receive a Sigma Alpha Iota Impact Project Grant to support a concert highlighting the music of African-American composer Florence Beatrice Price, and also featuring original compositions inspired by her work. These compositions will be by Centenary College composition majors. The concert will take place during the winter concert season of 2012.
Alumna Jessica Rautio Wright was selected to attend Yale's 2011 Symposium on Music in Schools and to receive the Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award. From a pool of more than 300 nominees representing 45 states, she was chosen by Yale's panel of music professionals for her outstanding accomplishments and vision as a public school music teacher.
