Sophomore Advising for Fall Semester

Students enroll for their sophomore year Fall courses in the spring of their first year. Arrange an appointment with each advisee, asking them to review Fall course offerings and to arrive to their appointment with a list of preferred classes. Prior to the meeting, review the student’s transcript, which can be found in the Advisor Menu on Banner. At the beginning of your advising session, discuss any challenges the student may be having. This might include deficiencies, personal challenges, or concerns about their current trajectory toward a degree. This is also a good time to discuss:

Declaring a Major/Selecting a Major Advisor

If your advisee has not yet declared a major or chosen a major advisor, encourage them to begin considering their options. Students are encouraged to declare a major by the Spring semester of their second year.

Starting a Degree Plan

You should be working with your advisee to begin their degree plan in their sophomore year. This document helps to keep the student on track and to visualize progress toward their degree. Starting and updating a degree plan before or during an advising session can be useful in planning a student’s schedule even if the student is uncertain about their major. Make sure to keep a copy for your own files.

Trek Requirements, Internships, Study-Abroad, Research Opportunities

Students in their second year should consider opportunities and expectations beyond their major, or “Explorations” Coursework.

  • Encourage your advisee to investigate internship opportunities, either during the summer or during the regular semester.
  • Sophomores should be thinking about how to fulfill their Trek Community requirement in a meaningful way with a plan to complete the requirement by the end of their second year. Discuss their options. View and learn helpful information about Centenary’s Community partnerships.
  • Students who are considering studying abroad through one of our many exchange partnerships should begin exploring their options by consulting Centenary’s Office of Intercultural Engagement
  • Some departments offer summer research opportunities for students, and individual faculty members may be seeking student research partners for the Student-Faculty Research Award. Talk with your advisee about their interest in research opportunities and help to connect them with appropriate faculty members looking for student researchers.
  1. Check to see if the student has passed Trek 115. If they haven’t, they must re-enroll in the course for Fall of the second year. When your advisee repeats a course, remember to have them complete the “Repeat & Replace” form and submit it to the Registrar’s Office.

  2. Inquire to see if the student has other courses that they wish to repeat, and have them complete another “Repeat and Replace” form.
