The Charles T. Beaird Chair of Philosophy was created to honor Dr. Charles Beaird. Dr. Beaird published the Shreveport Journal, an early champion of civil rights and a self-identified “liberal Republican.” He served as a pilot in the Marines during World War II, attaining the rank of captain. He became Dr. Beaird upon earning his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Columbia University in 1966. Upon returning to Shreveport, he led several local industries and became a social advocate, championing unions, fluoridation of the local water supply, and, along with his wife, establishing the Beaird Foundation. Over the course of his life, Dr. Beaird attended Centenary as a student, served on the Board of Trustees, and taught philosophy courses. This endowed chair ensures that philosophy will always have a place at Centenary College.
